Dibrugarh: The Dibrugarh Ladies Club conferred its prestigious Joymoti Award 2019 on Manju Borah, Indian female director and short film writer, on June 28 at Yolo Banquets.

In her speech full with wisdom, Borah talked about dignity of labour and at the same time, denounced any kind of gender discrimination in the sphere of work. Asserting that it was a folly to consider the women folk as a weaker section of the society, she added that the females were the world’s strongest force. Buttressing her point, she cited the example of a mother who plays an immensely important and irreplaceable part in the life of her child. However, her personal life was fraught with more odds than usual as she did not get any assistance from her family with respect to her career, she held.

Borah also underscored the changing face of cinema and the shift that celluloid was making from the conventional mode to digital. Moreover, mincing no words, she observed that the participation of women in the political and social spheres in India was comparatively low, despite the percentage of literate women being higher vis-à-vis men. Borah, who has bagged multiple national and international awards for direction, writing and cinematography, also touched upon many female-centric and relevant issues like freedom to wear anything of one’s choice. The event was presided over by the president of the Ladies Club, Ritu Baruah. The first president of the club, Effi Rahman, also graced the occasion.
