DIBRUGARH: Two Indian students on Friday safely returned home from war-ravaged Ukraine under Operation Ganga undertaken by the Government of India. Both the students are from Dibrugarh district pursuing studies in Ukraine. The students who returned safely to their homes are Darshan Pathak and Reya Sharma Thakur of Dibrugarh.
Speaking to The Sentinel, Darshan Pathak said, "It was a hard time in Ukraine, which I faced after Russia declared full war on Ukraine. I faced a harrowing time in Ukraine, cannot express my feelings. I stayed without food for two days, everybody were fearing for their life because Russians were dropping bombs everywhere. I was regular in touch with my parents and they guided me to remain positive. I thanked God that at last after facing so many hurdles, I safely returned back to my home."
"When I was waiting for the security checking at Kharkiv Airport, five bombs exploded near the airport and the government of Ukraine stopped all flights. The Indian Aircraft returned back to India and as many as 250 Indians were stuck at Kharkiv. Finding no alternative I took refuge in a Ukraine tank, after that I walked 30 km alone to Indian Embassy at Kharkiv for help. The Indian Embassy was helpless. I stayed two days without food," he said.
He further added, "The Indian Embassy refrained from helping and could not manage a bus or a vehicle for us. After that a local helped me to reach the Uzhhorod National University, where I am studying Medical in 3rd year. The university authority helped us to reach Hungary border. The Hungary government helped us with food and stay."
"On March 2, we finally reached India with other Indian students in a Indigo flight. After that we were taken to Assam House in New Delhi and they took care of us and on March 4, I reached my home town Dibrugarh," he said.
