DIBRUGARH: The 58-year-old Mancotta Rail Over Bridge (ROB) at Thana Charali, Dibrugarh will be dismantled and rebuilt with more elevation. As per new guidelines, the height of a Rail Over Bridge should be 6.5 metre from the railway line for electrification of railway route.

Earlier the height of old Rail Over Bridge was used to be 5.2 metres. The bridge which was built in 1965 is one the historical bridge of Dibrugarh town which connects Thana Charali Chowkidinghee.

Jayanta Hazarika’s famous song “Xuraat Mogon Bhoyal Raati” was picturized on the Dibrugarh Over Bridge in 1974. The film ‘Bristi’ by legendary director Deuti Barua was shot in Dibrugarh with renowned actors and actresses such as Biju Phukan, Bishnu Khargaria, Ela Kakoti, Bindiya Goswami etc.

The movement of trains to Dibrugarh Town Railway station (DBRT) has been closed from Sunday for four months for dismantling and rebuilding of Mancotta Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Thana Charali at Km 0/6-7 and for re-electrification work.

The Railway authority had approved four months traffic and power block at DBRT (Dibrugarh Town) station of TSK (Tinsukia) division for four months for dismantling & rebuilding of Mancotta ROB (Thana Charali over bridge) at Km 0/6-7 and for RE work.

In view of the above block, arrangements are being made for traffic movement for light motor vehicles through the roads at the both sides of the bridge crossing the rail track. The bridge will be reconstructed increasing the clearance height for the movement of electric trains up to Dibrugarh Town station.

Talking to The Sentinel, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu said, “The Over Bridge at Thana Charali will be dismantled and rebuilt with more elevation for the electrification of railway route. The process has already been started for an alternative route for traffic movements.”

Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan said, “For the beautification of Dibrugarh, the project has been approved. The over bridge will be dismantled and rebuilt with more elevation. Now, Dibrugarh town was divided into north and south and for the development of Dibrugarh many more projects will be taken. A new bridge will also come up near Dibrugarh Jagannath temple. The new bridge will give a new and smart look to Dibrugarh.”

“I’ve wrote a letter to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to completely shut down the old Dibrugarh town railway station and divert all trains to the new Dibrugarh railway station at Banipur on the outskirts of the town. If the Dibrugarh railway station will be shut down then most of the problems of Dibrugarh town will be solved. The problem which will be arising in Shantipara will be solved.”

The Dibrugarh town railway station was built in 1882 and is the oldest station in the northeast region. The tracks pass through the town and cause perennial traffic jams on the roads along the railway route resulting in severe inconvenience to commuters.
