DIGBOI: The Digboi Municipal Board has taken an initiative that is expected to serve both the travel needs of the people as well as create opportunities for the local people.

Digboi Municipal Board is planning to create a new stand for smaller vehicles used for local transportation. And this new stand will be created next to the existing public bus stand of Digboi. The organisation will also construct several small outlets wherein local people can set up their own small businesses. The local representative in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Suren Phukan was also present for the event wherein he laid the foundations of this new project.

Speaking on the occasion, the local MLA mentioned this upcoming project will be very beneficial to all the people of the region. Several key officials of the Digboi Municipal Board also attended the event.

On the education front, the Digboi-based Balijan Borjan Educational and Cultural Center (BBEC) recently extended financial assistance to 23 meritorious students of Balijan-Borjan areas in its annual award distribution programme. The annual award distribution ceremony which was held at Balijan Gauri Shankar Shiv Mandir was attended by Dr Narayan Upadhyaya, the renowned Neurologist of Assam as the Chief Speaker of the function while Dr Rashmita Upadhyaya was the guest of honour.

“As many as 23 meritorious students of Balijan Borjan area who passed HSLC, HS and ICSE and BA final examinations securing first division or first class were offered assistance,” informed Gopal Chandra Das, the forerunner who had pioneered the innovative concept of establishing the centre in the year 1992. According to Ganesh Chetry, one of the key members of the centre said that an amount of seventy thousand (70,000) was disbursed during the event in order to boost the morale of the agrarian meritorious students of the villages.
