SILCHAR: Arrest of an ousted BJP cadre in Bethukandi dyke breach incident triggered mudslinging between the district committee of the ruling party and former MLA Dilip Paul. Paul, who unsuccessfully contested last Assembly election as an independent candidate after being denied nomination had filed an FIR with Silchar police against nine members of district BJP alleging that they were intentionally trying to implicate him in the Bethukandi incident.
Police had recently arrested Raju Deb in connection with the dyke breach that caused massive flood in Silchar. Raju was an active cadre of BJP. During last election he worked for Paul who was contesting as an independent candidate. After the arrest of Raju, district BJP president Bimalendu Roy clarified that Deb was suspended from the party as he was campaigning for the independent candidate.
On Friday, after the executive committee meeting, two spokespersons of district BJP said, everyone knew for whom Raju Deb worked in last election and hence his leader should also be brought under investigation. Paul on the other hand in a counter attack, said CID should investigate which leader held a closed door meeting in Bethukandi just a day before the dyke was breached.
Welcoming the Chief Minister's order for CID probe, Paul further asked, why and under whose direction the administration took three weeks to start the repairing of the dyke after the damage was reported to the police. Admitting that Raju Deb was associated with him as a BJP cadre, Paul said, he (Raju) campaigned for other BJP leaders too and there was nothing wrong in it.
In his FIR, Paul said that a district BJP leader Jayanta Chakraborty in his Facebook account had intentionally raised questions about the former MLA's provocation behind the dyke breach. Co-convenor of party's district social media cell Sumana Das and Madhya Silchar Mandal, president Shantanu Roy had forwarded the message. Paul demanded strict action against these nine persons who had tried to malign his image. He further added that after last year's election he had virtually withdrawn himself from active politics and had concentrated on his business and other social service.
