HAFLONG: The Dima Hasao district administration has geared up to conduct the election to the 16 (ST) Haflong peacefully despite unavoidable constraints like terrain and lack of communication, said Md Abdul Kalam, Election Officer, Dima Hasao on Monday.

Talking to this correspondent, Kalam said that to conduct the election smoothly, more than 2,000 people were engaged. The whole district has been divided into 11 zones and 67 sectors against 246 polling stations. This time, there are altogether 1, 46,183 voters out of which 73,463 are male, 72,720 are female while PwD voters and 80+ voters are 245 and 1,755 respectively.

Regarding maintaining law and order, Superintendent of Police Jayant Sing said that to instill confidence among the voters, sufficient police force had been deployed. After the first phase of election in Assam, more security forces were expected to reach here so that the election could be conducted peacefully. Meanwhile, 3,000 litres of illicit liquor were destroyed and 2,800 guns were seized. Also, teams have been engaged to keep vigil on movement of such illegal items. They are also keeping an eye so that the voters are not intimidated or influenced by dishonest elements. He expressed confidence that election would be conducted smoothly and peacefully in Dima Hasao.
