Haflong: Regarding the creation of a Parliamentary and two Assembly constituencies in Dima Hasao, Dima Hasao District Congress Committee president Nirmal Langthasa along with District Congress leaders submitted a memorandum to the chairman of the Delimitation Commission of India through the Deputy Commissioner of Dima Hasao on Tuesday.

It was stated in the memorandum that at present there was only one Parliamentary constituency namely 3-Autonomous District (ST) Parliamentary constituency, for the three Hill districts of Assam comprising of Dima Hasao, East Karbi Anglong, and West Karbi Anglong. The three hill districts are inhabited by various tribes whose identity and culture vary. A lone Parliamentarian cannot appropriately address the issues of all the hill tribes in the Parliament and as a result, the political as well as the socio-economic aspirations of the hills remain unfulfilled, stated the memorandum.

“Hence, considering the necessity, demand for creation of a separate Parliamentary constituency for Dima Hasao district is placed. In addition to that, the Assembly constituency for Dima Hasao also has to be enhanced. At present, there is only one Assembly constituency, namely 16- Haflong (ST) Assembly constituency, for the entire Dima Hasao district comprising the population of 2,36,000 approximately with the geographical area of 4888 sq km. Considering the population and geographical facts and in comparison to our neighboring states of Manipur, Nagaland, and Meghalaya it is demanded to increase Assembly seats for proper representation in the Assam Assembly,” the memorandum stated.

The DCC urged for an initiative in this regard for strengthening Parliamentary democracy and for proportionate and equal representation in the Parliament and Assembly.
