Guwahati: Atul Bora, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who represents the Dispur constituency in the Assam Assembly has tested COVID-19 positive on Monday, reports said.

Atul Bora's COVID-19 positive status has come to the fore a day after Sonari BJP MLA Nabanita Handique had also tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. On Thursday, MLA Nabanita Handique's son Karanjyoti Handique was also tested positive for COVID-19. The incident came into light when The MLA's driver and a close aide have also been infected with the contagious disease. In Assam, several politicians including MLAs Krishnendu Paul, Narayan Deka, Balin Chetia, and former Silchar MP Sushmita Dev tested positive.

Dev. however, tested COVID-19 negative on Sunday, 12 days after her infection had come to light. "I tested negative for COVID after 12 days. Thank you, everyone, for your support. I watched the doctors, nurses, staff, and the microbiology team of the Silchar Medical college closely. They are very efficient despite the tough circumstances. I thank them for taking good care of me", Dev wrote in a tweet yesterday.

Meanwhile, the corona situation has continued to worsen in Assam with a massive surge in cases registered at the community level. With 1,018 more COVID-19 cases detected on Sunday, the caseload in Assam has risen to 23,999. The number of active patients now is 7,916, and 57 COVID-19 deaths have been reported so far in Assam. Across the nation, more than 40,000 fresh Covid-19 infections were reported on Sunday, capping India's deadliest week of the Covid-19 pandemic so far during which 2.38 lakh cases were reported. As many as 673 deaths were reported on Sunday.
