JAMUGURIHAT: Padmanath Gohain Baruah, one the eminent writers of Assamese literature, was also the first president of the Axam Xahitya Xabha. A statue of this great man who enriched Assamese literature was erected in the town of Tinsukia.

The statue was built by Tilak Chandra Handique, a resident of Tinsukia, along with his wife Swarnalata Handique, at a cost of Rs 8 lakh. The statue of Padmanath Gohain Baruah was officially unveiled on November 2, 2020. But today, the condition of the area nearest to the statue will surprise everyone. The surroundings of the statue have now become a dumping zone. There are also some people who spread their clothes on the railings of the walls near the statue to dry it.

There are many people in the town of Tinsukia who do not know the past of the Assamese art, cultural and literature or do not understand the value of the great writers.

The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) State president Nishant Thard called the incident unfortunate, informed the Media Officer of the organization, Mrinmay Kumar Nath. The organization has urged the municipality of Tinsukia to take immediate action in this regard.

The scene was witnessed by Sanjay Gohain Baruah, a well-known guitarist and music director of Assam, grandson of Padma Nath Gohain Baruah, another member of the family of the writer living in Tezpur. He is aware of the erection of the statue of the pioneer of Assamese literature but is saddened by such disrespect.
