District administration intensifies drive against traffic violations

SILCHAR: In view of the random violation of traffic rules due to unlicensed and rash driving, overload, overtaking and unhealthy competition among reckless drivers resulting in fatal accidents, causing loss of life and limbs, the administration of Cachar has intensified drive against the guilty persons on roads and highways crisscrossing the district. The drive has been taken up in compliance of the order the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli, in Katigorah and Kalain areas along NH 6, the highly accident prone zone that has been witness to frequent road mishaps.

It is relevant to recall that last Friday on Kalain- Lakhipur road a speeding loaded truck collided head on with yet another Alto at high speed, killing five students of Nabin Chandra College, Badarpur, on the spot. Impact of the crash was so intense that the front side of the truck was badly damaged and the Alto was thrown like a paper basket down, 20 feet down the ditch, along the road. The tragic road rage came as deep shock to the people of Barak Valley and the district administration was shaken.

The concerned Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, convened a meeting of different political parties and representatives of students of Nabin Chandra College in her conference hall to get their feedbacks on how to tackle the menace of frequent accidents on highways and roads. Both the representatives of political parties and students as well as citizens spoke in one voice not only the law abiding road users but also people in general feel scared to be on roads and highways and offered the views that stringent actions have to be taken against those violating the traffic rules. Students in particular submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner with a slew of suggestions for their solutions.

The Deputy Commissioner directed the DTO to step up enforcement and executive engineer PWD to take necessary steps in this direction. A raid was conducted by circle officer of Katigorah, Pranjit Deb, with the help of enforcement wing. The enforcement inspector Om Prakash Upadhaya, assistant enforcement inspectors P Terong, M Sinha, Balbir Singh and OC Katigorah H Singh also took part in the drive. This led to registration of around 50 cases by transport department for violation of Motor Vehicle Act. A sum of Rs 3 lakh was realised. Circle officer said, "The raids started from Monday in Katigorah and Kalain areas will continue and strict action will be taken against drivers and owners for violating traffic rules." The drive of the district administration of Cachar has come in for high appreciation by people of Barak Valley in general.
