HAILAKANDI: The District Health Society reviewed a gamut of health-related issues with focus on maternal and child mortality rates.

Reviewing the health-related issues at his office conference hall here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner-cum-chairman, District Health Society, Megh Nidhi Dahal asked the health functionaries to take all possible steps to bring down the maternal and child mortality rates, stated a press release.

Dahal told the functionaries that he would review it every month. "Maternal and child mortality will be now reviewed by the Deputy Commissioner every month so that the reasons of deaths can be known and necessary steps can be adopted for preventing it," said a health official.

Teenage pregnancy or early marriage has gone up from 22 per cent to 33 per cent in the district. The meeting, while expressing serious concern, underscored the need for initiating remedial steps in right earnest.

The meeting decided that ante natal check-up by ANMs for pregnant women will be monitored by district and block level officials. "Henceforth, all pregnant women must complete four rounds of ante natal check-ups," said the health official.

The silver lining is that there has been improvement in institutional delivery, family planning and immunization drive in the district as per National Family Health Survey-5 2019-20. Dahal, while complimenting the health officials and functionaries, exhorted them to keep up the good work in the days ahead.

The Deputy Commissioner instructed the Joint Director, Health Services to initiate strict action against all insincere and irresponsible staff. "As per direction of the Deputy Commissioner, reorientation will be given to the incompetent staff so that they can extend better services," said the official.
