NALBARI: Synchronising with the aim to work out effective ways to reduce road accidents and improve road safety standards as per guidelines of the Supreme Court, the District Road Safety Committee meeting of September was held on Saturday under the chairmanship of the Nalbari District Commissioner-cum-Chairperson of District Road Safety Committee Varnali Deka in the presence of Nalbari SP Sudhakar Singh and all other respective members of the committee. The committee discussed various current issues catering to road safety in the district and the actions taken on the issues raised and discussed in the last DRSC meeting.

DC Varnali Deka urged all the members concerned of the committee to abide by the CM's directions to leave no stone unturned to ensure zero fatalities in the district caused by road mishaps. DC Deka asked the departments concerned to pro-actively work towards placing the district on top in terms of curbing the menace.

SP Sudhakar Singh asked the representatives of NHAI to ensure adequate arrangement of lighting and installation of other road safety measures at the black spots of the district as discussed in the previous meeting, which are not properly covered yet.

DC Deka directed NHAI to install blinkers, reflectors, road studs, necessary signage, etc., and to undertake other safety measures as mandated at the accident-prone areas without waiting for them to be declared black spots by the concerned higher authority. The representatives of the National Highway Authority came up with the idea of setting up a 'Traffic Learning Centre, which was appreciated by DC Nalbari, and she asked the persons concerned with NHAI to plan for separate sessions on traffic signals too. The District Commissioner further asked the District Transport Officer to conduct extensive awareness meetings among the general public on road safety. She further asked him to come up for the next meeting of the DRSC with the authentic and accurate figures of accidents and fatal accidents and the dark spots in the district. She also directed the executive engineer of the Territorial Roads Division to investigate the accident-prone spots in person and initiate the necessary process to install speedbreakers as requested by the general masses. DC wound up the meeting, expecting all members of the committee to be well home-worked on their part of the issues for the next DRSC meeting, along with a clear report of actions initiated as per the discussion of the meeting.
