TEZPUR: A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held on Friday in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

The meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Manvendra Pratap Singh, discussed several issues related to road safety such as eviction of illegal encroachment along National Highways, proper and frequent sanitization of all public transport vehicles, creation of traffic volunteer force and removal of illegal advertisement hoardings along National Highways.

The Deputy Commissioner directed officials of the PWD (Roads) department to carry out urgent repair works of the roads in and around Tezpur town and reviewed the action taken regarding the resolutions in the last DRSC meeting held in February. The Deputy Commissioner also directed officials to remove all illegal hoardings along National Highways at the earliest.

Reviewing the traffic offence reports of the last six months along with the road accident data, the Deputy Commissioner instructed the District Transport Officer to initiate strict action against traffic offenders who do not appear at hearings. The accident data for the period January to June, 2020 submitted by DTO revealed there were 138 accidents involving motor vehicles in Sonitpur district where 56 people lost their lives while 82 others were injured.

Moreover, he instructed the PWD (NH) officials to carry out eviction of all illegal encroachment on land under their jurisdiction at the earliest and submit report before the next DRSC meeting.

The Deputy Commissioner also appealed to the representatives of all tempos, e-rickshaws and other public transport associations to frequently carry out sanitization of their vehicles with sodium hypochlorite solution and ensure social distancing norms and other COVID-19 hygiene protocol to prevent the spread of the disease.
