SILCHAR: After a series of dramatic episodes, the prestigious Silchar District Sports Association (DSA) got a new team on Sunday. Leading chartered accountant of the town Shibabrata Dutta defeated the outgoing president Babul Hore for the coveted post while the Congressman Atanu Bhattacharjee defeated Chandan Sarma for the post of general secretary. Elections for the 26 executive council members were held on Sunday noon and results were out at midnight. Hore, a veteran sports organiser who was actively associated with the DSA, for the first time was defeated with a reasonable margin of 25 votes. This year the DSA election took a sharp political turn as local MLA Dipayan Chakrabarty fielded his own panel, tagged as ‘ruling party panel’, while both Hore and Bhattacharjee were office bearers of the district Congress. Apart from the general secretary, the ruling party supported candidates won with considerable margin. The outgoing general secretary Bijendra Prasad Singh, a BJP leader, however withdrew his name at the last stage.
