LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of globe, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed in Lakhimpur district on Saturday in order to highlight the issues that affect people with disabilities. The theme for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities for the year 2022 is 'Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world'. By laying stress on the theme, the event was celebrated to make people aware of the issues of concern and mobilize political will to resolve them.

On the occasion, Inclusive Education Resource Persons under Lakhimpur Education Block, Pankaj Hazarika, Dipak Saikia and Additional Resource Person Chakra Bhorali organized week-long programmes from November 27 to December 3 under the banner of 'Divyang Saptah'. During the week, several competitions among Divyanga children, awareness programmes on Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, inclusive education, Divyanga children health screening camps were organized in different places under the Education Block.

On the other hand, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was ceremonially observed at North Lakhimpur town MV School on Saturday under the auspices of the resource persons. The agenda of the event kickstarted with the unfurling of flag by Jitumoni Dutta, the headmaster of the school. Then the Day Care Centre of Inclusive Education under Lakhimpur Education Block was inaugurated by Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, District Elementary Education Officer Hemchandra Saikia and other dignitaries. It was followed by an awareness rally in North Lakhimpur town with the participation of a total of 120 Divyanga children. It was flagged off by ADC Geetalee Duworah.

Resource person Pankaj Hazarika delivered a lecture on Sarbatmak Siksha addressing the D.L.Ed trainees of the DIET, Lakhimpur. Moreover, a documentary on different activities conducted by Inclusive Education under Lakhimpur Education Block was screened in the same event. The documentary was released by DIET teacher Mantu Buragohain. It was followed by an awareness meeting. North Lakhimpur Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Dr Queen Baruah graced the occasion as chief guest, who delivered lecture on the causes for the birth of Divyanga children and their care. District Programme Officer Gitali Neog and many other dignitaries delivered lecture in the awareness programme on related topics.

In the same programme, Prerona Award-2022, instituted by the Government of Assam, was conferred on Upen Gogoi, the headmaster of Panindra Bidyalay, and Mondeep Sonowal, the district Divyanga topper in the HSLC exam of this year. On the other hand, coordinator Mridul Kalita, teachers Puspanjali Haldar, Tanushyam Nayak, Himashree Borah and journalist Rahanuddin Ahmed were given warm felicitation for their service to the well-being of the Divyanga children. Several Divyanga children presented cultural items in the programme.
