SILCHAR: From Silchar town to Dolu tea garden, protest against the proposed airport marked the World Environment Day on Sunday.

'Save Dolu Garden Coordination Committee' symbolically used Environment Day as as tool protest against uprooting 3 million tea bushes at Lalbagh and Mainagarh division of Dolu TE estate using more than 150 excavators. However, rally at Kshudiram Point was a poorly attended show with nearly 40 demonstrators and more than 200 policemen. The demonstrators demanded clarification from the district administration as well as the government following a reply to a RTI from a Under Secretary of Civil Aviation Ministry which said there was no proposal of airport in Silchar. In Dolu, however, the picture was different. Braving heavy shower, hundreds of garden labourers assembled at Lalbagh division and started a procession. After worshiping a sapling they moved towards Silchar town but the procession was stopped at Lathigram and Madhurapul point by armed police force.
