TEZPUR: The Narendra Deva Shastri Memorial Award for contributions towards literature, culture, journalism and educational field respectively for the year 2021 was conferred on noted science writer, educationist, translator and a retired former Head of Department of Physics, Darrang College, Dr Ramesh Chandra Goswami at a special award-giving function organized in connection with the 93rd birth anniversary of the noted Sanskrit scholar and veteran journalist Narendra Deva Shastri by the Sonitpur Press Club, Tezpur at Tezpur Xahitya Xabha Bhawan on Saturday.

Dr Ramesh Chandra Goswami, a multi-dimensional literary personality, Dr. Goswami has to his credit now, more than 22 popular science books, above 1000 articles published in various leading magazines and newspapers of Assam, besides contributing numerous writings to books, dictionaries and encyclopedias in science. Dr Goswami also received National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science and Technology Communication through print media including books and magazines for the year 2014 by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication of the Union Government at New Delhi.

Receiving the award, Dr Ramesh Chandra Goswami appreciated the noble effort of Sonitpur Press Club to keep alive the ideology of Sanskrit scholar and veteran journalist Narendra Deva Shastri by organising such an event in his memory.

The programme was formally inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Sonitpur, Bhupesh Chandra Das. It was followed by an oration programme which was presided over by Subhash Chandra Biswas, president of Sonitpur Press Club and was graced by a host of noted dignitaries including the chief speaker of Narendra Deva Shastri Memorial oration programme Dr Narayan Sarmah, noted educationist and founder of Axom Jatiya Bidyalaya, among others.

Senior journalist and cultural activist Pulak Kumar Deka gave the welcome address wherein he spoke on the life of Narendra Deva Sastri and importance of the event and the contribution and dedication of the Sanskrit Pandit Narendra Deva Shastri.

In the event, first women journalist of the undivided Sonitpur district, Swarna Hazarika was felicitated with a citation, a memento and a seleng. Two senior journalists Kushmakhar Upadhyaya and Dip Kumar Kalita were also given special felicitation with phulam gamusa.
