Dr. Waliul Islam and caretaker Lakshi Rai, Two held for child abuse

GUWAHATI: The Paltan Bazar police registered a case (193/23 under Section 307/326 r/w Section 75 of the Juveline Justice Act) and arrested Dr. Waliul Islam and caretaker Lakshi Rai today on the charge of child abuse. It may be mentioned that a three-year-old was tied on the terrace to a post under the sun. The Paltan Bazar Police and Child Line rescued the child and detained the doctor. The police have yet to locate Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, in whose house the child was staying. The victim girl on Saturday underwent a medical examination at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

According to a police source, the ASCPCR (Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights) wrote a letter to the Guwahati Police Commissionerate requesting an inquiry into the adoption process undertaken by the couple. According to a source, in 2019, the same allegation came to light against Dr. Waliul.
