TINSUKIA/DIGBOI: Lekhapani Police, led by officer-in-charge Puranjoy Bora, apprehended a wholesale drug peddler besides seizing 440 grams of opium in a semi-liquid state and cash amounting to Rs 6.60 lakh from the possession of the accused at his residence on Friday afternoon.
The arrested wholesale drug peddler has been identified as Jiban Chetry, son of Dal Bahadur Chetry of No.2 Bisagaon under Lekhapani police station in Tinsukia district.
“We raided the residence of the accused on Friday afternoon and recovered sufficient possession along with the cash and other objectionable materials, including weighing items and drug inhaling devices,” said Borah on Saturday morning, adding, “The accused is a wholesale drug trader.”
Meanwhile, when contacted, the relatives of the accused said that the police was tough in their proceedings during the operation but were not indifferent towards the minor dependents of the accused after the arrest was made. The police gave Rs 20,000 to the wife of the accused to ensure that the immediate and basic needs of the family members remained unaffected following the arrest of the notorious head of the family. “The two minor children are appearing for their school examination,” informed a close relative of the accused.
A suo motto case has been registered (130/19) at Lehapani Police Station and the accused is being prosecuted u/s 22 (b) of NDPS Act.
Similarly, on Saturday morning a team of Lekhapani Police, in the drive against the menace of country-made liquor, destroyed around 250 litres of country-made liquor in Tinikuti village in Lekhapani.
