Durga Puja: Maha Saptami Celebrated with Religious Fervour in Jorhat

JORHAT: Maha Saptami celebration kicked off with great pomp and gaiety in 219 Durga Puja pandals and temples in Jorhat. Religious rituals have been performed here since the Ahom era in the historic Burhigukhani Dewalaya and Hatigarh Dewalaya.

Large crowd of people were seen in malls and shopping hubs and also in the busy Garali, AT Road and Tarajan areas. Restaurants, cafeteria, bars and beauty parlours wore a festive look. People were seen thronging the puja pandals to seek blessings from Goddess Durga. Most of the tea gardens have given 20 per cent bonus to the garden labourers and Maha Saptami was celebrated with enthusiasm in the tea gardens with various cultural programmes, including Jhumur and aarti competitions.

Awards will be given away to puja pandals for cleanliness, discipline, creativity and social awareness. The awards will be handed over to the winners by the Deputy Commissioner at a glittering function after the Puja, said Sandip Nandi, the president of Jorhat district puja committee. Meanwhile, the district administration has taken adequate measures to ensure law and order during the Puja days.
