GUWAHATI: The District Transport Officer of Kamrup Metropolitan district has ordered the compulsory use of electronic ticketing systems across the city. The order was passed last Friday.
This step will make sure that only the correct fare can be charged to the passengers. It will allow the passengers to have proof of their journeys, and make way for proper complaints to the competent authorities in case of any discrepancies.
These new ticketing systems will use a handheld ticketing machine. This semi-automatic machine will be able to generate and print tickets based on the source and destination locations. The ticket issued by the machine is expected to have details of the vehicle, boarding and deboarding bus stands, and time of journey among other details.
In the notification issued from the office of the DTO, e-ticketing machines have been made compulsory from the beginning of the next month. All necessary procurements, arrangements, and training for the conductors have to be completed within this month by the owners of the buses. Failure of which will prevent the buses from plying in the city.
The department had approved the increase of bus fares in another notification that was published on October 5. As per that notification the minimum fare in the buses was increased from the previous amount of Rs. 7 to Rs. 10. And the maximum fare was fixed at Rs. 30.
The new fare slabs for Guwahati City Buses are as follows.
0 to 5 kms - Rs 10
5 to 9 kms - Rs 15
9 to 13 kms - Rs 18
13 to 17 kms - Rs 22
17 to 21 kms - Rs 26
21 to 25 kms - Rs 30
More than 25 kms - Re 1 per kilometer.
Although the use of tickets in city buses was made compulsory by the authorities several times in the past, it was never implemented to the mark. Also, the use of cheap quality paper tickets did not serve the full purpose. As they did not mention any information about the exact vehicle, stoppages, time, etc. , they could not be used as proof in case of any complaints.
