GUWAHATI: The continued 'economic blockade' imposed by several organizations in the Barak valley in Assam has turned Mizoram's food crisis more severe.
After the July 26 violent clash that claimed the lives of seven people including six personnel of the Assam police, angry locales in the Barak Valley have imposed an 'economic blockade' against the neighbouring state.
The Zoramthanga government has been trying hard to mitigate the crisis born out of the food crisis but the people have begun to suffer.
The government has taken recourse of air transportation to bring essential articles from Kolkata. The stalemate with Assam also creates a fuel crisis in the Northeastern border state.
The crisis of food and other essential items may worsen more as the Barak Valley protesting organizations have reportedly started a stir against Tripura, too which has been providing help and support to Mizoram. Sources revealed that the protesting organizations are in a mood to lift the 'economic blockade'.
Both the states' governments on the other hand have been trying to amicably solve the border issue and restore amity between them. In the meanwhile, two Assam ministers Atul Bora and Ashok Singhal have been appointed as goodwill ambassadors for furthering the negotiations with the Mizoram government.
On the other hand, the Mizoram Health Minister has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home and Health Ministers to intervene as the state has been facing a severe crisis of medicines including life saving and COVID-19 related drugs due to the "economic blockade" on the National Highway-306.
Mizoram Health and Family Welfare Minister on Tuesday said in Aizawl that the hilly state has been facing an acute crisis of vital medicines and urged the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to intervene at the earliest to prevent any health crisis that may soon engulf Mizoram and which would be beyond the control of anybody.
