LAKHIMPUR: A group of educated youths in Lakhimpur district has heralded a green revolution by organic farming and paved way for their self-employment. With their relentless venture, they have not only provided employment to others but also set example to encourage the job seekers.

These youths are— Asim Bhuyan, Jayanta Doley, Ratnakanta Doley, Gyanikanta Doley, Tarun Doley, Prashad Doley, Muktinath Doley, Puspendra Doley, Rakesh Doley, Biswa Pegu, Uttam Doley, Ajanta Doley, Dhruba Doley Bikram Doley and Ajit Pegu under Narayanpur area of the district. With their hard work and perseverance, they have created a vegetable farm in a plot of land measuring 400 bighas at Tikirai Chapori on the bank of River Subansiri. With organic method of farming, they have cultivated lettuce, coriander, reddish, pea, black gram, bottle guard, potato, onion, brinjal along with other vegetables in the farm. They have initiated the venture at a time when most of the youths have migrated to other States in search for jobs and when the majority of youths see their future outside the agriculture sector.

At present, the plants of the vegetables are growing as expected bearing the promise of good production in the near future. The farmers are using dry cow dung as fertilizer in their cultivation following the method of organic farming. It has increased public demand for their produce. At present, these progressive farmers have managed to sell their produce and already earned around Rs 2 lakh within a month by selling them.

Further, they stated that the dry weather, with no precipitation, had affected their production. "The production would have been more if water could have been supplied to the farm with the initiative of the Agriculture Department," they informed, adding that they did not receive any benefits from the department concerned. Notably, these youths have been initiating this venture of vegetable farming for the last 10 years.

With the example set by the diligent youths, it can be seen that there are many good livelihood opportunities in agriculture. The challenge is to make the agricultural sector and its up and downstream activities competitive through innovation and public investment.
