GUWAHATI: Ranoj Pegu, the Education Minister of the Government of Assam attended an event organised today, December 7, on the premises of the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra to mark the 91st birthday of the late Homen Borgohain.

Speaking during the event he reminded the public of the state about the illustrious writer. He also mentioned the importance of reading books in the modern day and encourages the younger generations to start literary societies to inculcate this habit. Speaking on the occasion, he announced that the state will provide a pension to 23 selected writers from across the state. These chosen senior writers will be able to avail of Rs 8000 per month from the state government.

The minister also announced that his department will post advertisements for 30000 new posts to fulfil all vacancies adding that the advertisements will be out in the upcoming days. He also mentioned that the teachers must also work hard towards the achievement of the goals in education while telling them to make proper utilisation of all the resources given by the state government.

The education minister also distributes scientific calculators to schools which did well in the High School Leaving Certificate Examination conducted this year. Schools which have achieved 90% or more pass percentages in the examination were selected for this project. A total of 196 schools were chosen from across the state and each of them received 20 calculators for the help of their students and the betterment of results. These equipment are provided through the 'Gyan Ki Rashmi' program in collaboration with the Rural Development Centre, Global Hunt Foundation and Casio India.

Talking about the education system in schools in the state, he mentioned that the teachers of the state need to be technologically literate. He added that computer courses will become a compulsory qualification in the upcoming recruitment processes for teaching positions.
