Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu lays foundation stone of government law college in Cachar

SILCHAR: Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu laid the foundation stone for construction of a government law college at Chiripool under Lakhipur assembly constituency in Cachar district on Saturday in the presence of MLA Kaushik Rai and Cachar Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha.

Dr Pegu, who reached Silchar on Friday and was here for two days, visited the 104 Pailapool model lower primary school (under Lakhipur education block) on the third day of Gunotsav and took part in the evaluation phase. The minister, who was accompanied by MLA Kaushik Rai, also participated in the school's morning assembly.

During the evaluation phase, Dr Pegu asked the students some questions from their textbooks and received satisfactory answers from the students. The minister played the role of a teacher and had an interactive session and exchanged ideas with the students and teachers of the school. Later, the minister laid the foundation stone of the law college and addressed a gathering at the Fulertal multipurpose community hall. Addressing the gathering, the minister said that an amount of Rs. 15.50 crore had been sanctioned by the government for the construction of the law college. Among the new nine law colleges in Assam, one will be constructed in Lakhipur in Barak Valley.

"There are a handful of government law colleges in the State. Therefore, the government has decided to build nine new law colleges. A sum of Rs. 15.50 crore has been allocated for the construction of law college in Lakhipur," the minister said.

"According to the decision of the State Government, foundation stone of one of the nine government law colleges of the state was laid in Lakhipur today," Dr Pegu said.

The minister enlightened about the State's new education policy saying the government was mulling to make all the streams (arts, science and commerce) operational in every college. However, it will take some time to arrange subject teachers of three subjects simultaneously in each college. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is keen on making changes in the field of education system, he said.

Speaking at the event, MLA Kaushik Rai credited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dr Ranoj Pegu for the initiation of setting up of the law college in Lakhipur. Rai also requested minister Dr Pegu to set up a degree college in South Lakhipur area and to introduce science department at Nehru College and arts department at Nehru Higher Secondary School.

MLA Rai also mentioned that earlier there were three higher secondary schools in Lakhipur and three more high schools have been upgraded to higher secondary schools. Among these three schools, Jagai Mathura High School, Ranipur High School and Palorband Garden High School have been upgraded to higher secondary schools, he said. In response to MLA Rai's plea, minister Dr Pegu assured all cooperation for the development of the educational institutions in Lakhipur.
