JORHAT: Family members of educationist Hira Dutta donated her house at Atila Gaon in the district in her memory to Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat. Hira Dutta was former Principal of Gitarthi High School and an educationist.
In a ceremony held in the house premises, the legal documents related to transferring the property were handed over to the college authorities by the relatives of Dutta. Vice-Principal of the college, Surajit Sharma said that Hira Dutta, who was unmarried, had expressed the wish to donate her property to an educational institute and in accordance, her family had contacted the authorities of JB College. Sharma said that the addition of property to the college could not have come at a more opportune moment when the college was on the verge of transiting to a University.
The ceremony was presided over by Dr Tapan Dutta, retired Assam Agricultural University Professor and sports organizer, and anchored by Sudipta Nayan Goswami, an advocate of Jorhat Bar Association.
On behalf of JB College, Principal Bimal Barah, president of governing body Dr Bichitra Kumar Borthakur, Academic Vice-Principal (Arts) of the college, Dr Surajit Sharma were present while on behalf of the donor family trust, Dr Tapan Dutta, Dipti Dutta Goswami, Minakshi Bora and Supita Nayan Goswami represented in the function.
Earlier, Dr Dipa Dutta lit the lamp before the picture of Hira Dutta followed by rendition of Mangalacharan by senior advocate Bhaba Goswami, who is also a writer and associated with cultural activities.
