LAKHIMPUR: "Unemployment problem is such a problem which has been impacting the Assamese social and economic life adversely for a long time after the independence. The political parties of Assam must know the historical background of the problem in the State. They must study how the markets and businesses of the State went to the people of other States since the beginning of the reign of the British in order to chalk out effective policies to mitigate the problem in a true sense. Otherwise, it will remain the same as it is," stated Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa in Lakhimpur on Monday. The noted columnist, who is the Head of the Department of Assamese in the North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) said so while taking part in the public meeting of the 33rd biennial conference of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Unemployed Association (AAUA).

Notably, the Lakhimpur district unit of AAUA held the event at Uttar Lakhimpur Xahitya Xabha Bhawan with a daylong programme. It kick-started with the unfurling of the organizational flag by president Binod Das while the general secretary in-charge Bhupen Sonowal conducted the swahid tarpan event. The public meeting commenced with AAUA Central Committee general secretary Jiban Rajkhowa in the chair. It was inaugurated by social worker Sajad Hazarika. Dr Arabinda Rajkhowa graced the occasion as appointed speaker who delivered his lecture on a topic, 'Role of political parties in mitigation of unemployment problem.'

"Basically, the main objective of a political party is to obtain power and to form government. As such, the promises of the political party are influenced by this objective resulting in the pending of the main problems. At present, the market system is not in our hand. It has been controlled by the corporates. The markets should be reorganized for the unemployed youths to encourage them to be involved in the productive sectors like agriculture, small industries etc. through which they can earn profit. In this regard, the political parties in power should initiate steps," Dr. Rajkhowa said in context of the topic.

He further added, "Youths should be made technically fit to mitigate the unemployment problem. The responsibility of the political parties in power should be to implement such education policy." In the meeting, retired professor Naren Sarmah, retired chief manager of SBI Kula Nath Bhorali, planning officer Ananta Bhuyan, North Lakhimpur Press Club president Kumud Baruah delivered informative lectures as special guests.

Earlier, the delegates' session of the organization was held. It was inaugurated by Central Committee organizing secretary Chirantan Hazarika, while another organizing secretary Fazalur Rahman attended as observer. In the event, the 31 member executive body of the Lakhimpur district unit of AAUA was constituted with Binod Das as president and Bhupen Sonowal as general secretary.
