Covid taxes on these products were levied by the government last year to revive the state economy devastated after the novel coronavirus hit the state and accounted to an increase of Rs 5 per litre on petrol and diesel.

Himanta Biswa Sarma then said that the state government was losing revenue as the buying of fuel by customers had come down drastically. "To cover some of the losses we had to increase the prices. we are trying to protect our revenue by hiking the prices as earlier our monthly dues as royalty was Rs 166 crore but now we will get around Rs 50 crore."
