NAGAON: District Agriculture Department, Nagaon has taken a slew of initiatives to provide the true value as well as prices of vegetables and other agricultural products to the farmers of the district. Besides, the department concerned has also made arrangements to export those agricultural products to outside the State, sources said.

These steps to strengthen the financial backbone of the farmer community as well as to avail the actual market prices of their respective agricultural products, have been initiated by the district agriculture department in a joint venture under special pursuance of district agriculture officer Tarun Hazarika, district agriculture marketing coordinator, Ankur Goswami, world vegetables coordinator Sushanta Das, and district horticulture coordinator Pankaj Hazarika.

Sources said that as part of these initiatives of the department concerned, the district agriculture department exported over 20 tons pumpkin on Saturday, produced by six farmers of Nagaon Dakorghat area under Agribusiness and Rural Transformation (APART) project. Besides, a Jorhat based agricultural company named Vegetables Private Company Limited went ahead to buy almost all kinds of vegetables produced in a massive way by a host of agriculture production companies of the district.

Over 14 agricultural production companies of the district inked an agreement with the company in a meeting held at the office of district agriculture department, Nagaon on Saturday. The company also agreed to buy the agricultural products, especially vegetables, from those agriculture production companies at higher rate of prices.

The farmers of the district always play a pivotal role in production of vegetables in the entire State and around 3,51,000 metric ton vegetables are produced every year in around 26,000 hectares of land in the district, an official release added.
