Eminent musician and composer Sisir Kumar Suni passes away

MANGALDAI: Octogenarian musician and composer of high repute and an unsung genius in the field of culture and music, Sisir Kumar Suni is no more. He breathed his last on Friday morning at about 11.20 am in his residence at village Bengbari-20 km to the west of Udalguri town. He was suffering from prolonged ailment. He was 89.

Born to the family of eminent medical practitioner of that time, Dr. James Suni and Giri Bala Devi, Sisir Kumar Suni completed his schooling from Tezpur Government High School and came in to close contact with Sydney Andels of Tezpur Mission, who on sensing the hidden talent in the young Sisir Kumar Suni, taught him piano, guitar, mandolin and violin. Later, Suni totally devoted and dedicated his time in practicing musical instruments and within a short period he earned fame and glory in the musical world. He was one of very few of his time to compose notation.

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU), during the State-level celebration of Bishnu Rabha Divas at Udalguri in 1988, had felicitated him in recognition of his sincere and dedicated life towards music. The State Government has also honoured him with the State Government artist pension in 2017. Sisir Kumar Suni leaves behind his wife, three sons and two daughters. The cremation will be solemnized on Saturday morning as per Christian rituals at Bengbari. Former AASU activist Hiren Kumar Saharia and Dalim Bayan have deeply mourned his demise.
