MANGALDAI: A large number of citizens of Darrang district joined the countrywide celebration of 73rd Independence Day with tremendous enthusiasm and spirit. In the centrally organized celebration at Kachari Maidan here, Minister of State for Irrigation Bhabesh Kalita ceremonially hoisted the national tricolor and inspected a guard of honour hosted by the contingents of Assam Police, Home Guards, NCC and scouts. He also received the salute from the contingents of Assam Police, Home Guards, NCC and scouts who took part in the march past to mark the auspicious day. Minister Bhabesh Kalita in his speech recalled the role and sacrifices of the prominent freedom fighters of the district namely Dineswar Sarma, Pani Ram Das, Ratneswar Sarma, Tapeswar Sarma in the freedom struggle and appealed to the younger generation to study the life and works of the freedom fighters. He, on behalf of the district administration, felicitated eminent poet, composer and writer Idrish Ali, ideal young organic farmer Khirod Sarma, media person Gagan Saharia, a sincere and efficient employee of DC’s office Rantu Deka and several other persons for their contribution towards the society in different fields. Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia, legislators Guru Jyoti Das and Binanda Saikia also took part in the ceremonial celebration of the Independence.
