LAKHIMPUR: Several organizations staged protest in Lakhimpur against the encroachment on the Assam-Arunachal border area. Led by Harmutty regional unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Saturday, Gorkha Students’ Union, Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), All Adivasi Students’ Union of Assam (AASAA) along with the local public blocked the Harmoti-Doimukh road at Harmutty. These organizations demanded the district administration to ensure security to the people of the border area. The organizations further demanded to establish the Border Outpost (BPO) at the same place at Moinajuli where it had been decided earlier and to strengthen the APBn camp.
Notably, the Lakhimpur district body of AASU on July 25 submitted a memorandum to Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Dr. Jeevan B regarding the unabated encroachment at Moinajuli in the Assam-Arunachal border areas belonging to the district. By submitting the memorandum, the organization demanded the DC take steps within 24 hours. In the memorandum, the organization alleged that the construction of concrete houses and establishing of new villages, encroaching the land of Assam from across the border had been seen at Bandardewa, Moinajuli of Hurmutty along with other border places of the district. The memorandum further stated that many valuable trees had been cut down and construction work by the encroachers had been going on for several days just near the Border Police Outpost at Moinajuli.
Later, Lakhimpur ADC Sarangapani Sarmah, ASP Santanu Dutta, CO of Bihpuriya Revenue Circle, Dipti Morang arrived at the protest venue and called upon the protesters to withdraw their agitation. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the district administration in support of their demands. The district administration gave them a word to take due steps regarding the issue.
