Endangered species of fish recovered at Jamugurihat, two arrested

JAMUGURIHAT: A team of Biswanath Wildlife Division managed to recover two endangered species of Spotted Snake Head fishes, locally known as Pilpli Cheng, and arrested two persons involved in smuggling of endangered fish at Jamugurihat on Thursday.

The arrested fish smugglers were identified as Anwar Hussain and Zakir Hussain. Anwar Hussain hailed from Bhogkhowa Chapari while Zakir Hussain is from Garsinga Bihia village of Panch Mile. The smugglers were arrested during a raid conducted by the Biswanath Wildlife Division. The two have been sent to jail by the forest department.

One of the two rare Cheng fish recovered was dead while the other was alive. The rare and endangered Pipli Cheng fish is smuggled abroad due to its high value. While contacted, Dr Sanjib Upadhyaya, Head of the department of Zoology, THB college, said that the scientific name of the rare endemic fish of Assam is Channa barca Ham, 1822.
