DHUBRI: A six-month enrichment course on History, Heritage, Culture and Tourism was introduced in Bholanath College in the Digital and Geo-Tech Hall under the auspices of the History Department on Wednesday.

After formally introducing the course, Principal of the college, Dr. Dhruba Chakrabortty appealed to the students who had enrolled for this course to enrich themselves by knowing and learning about the local history, heritage, culture and the tourism industry of the place along with the north-eastern region and the rest of the country.

"Tourism industry is a huge industry in our country now and its potential is yet to be fully tapped and explored. In India, 80 per cent of the tourism industry centres around the heritage sites. So, there is huge scope and opening in this industry," Dr. Chakrabortty said. He also said that for this course, students should have interest to know about the local history and heritage sites.

Earlier, Vice-Principal of the college, Prof Abdul Motleb Mondal addressed the students and spoke about the importance of this course. Head of the History department, Prof Robindra Das, Prof Ebrahim Ali Mondal, Prof. Susmita Sengupta and faculty member of the course, Bijoy Kumar Sharma also spoke in the inaugural function.

Talking to The Sentinel, secretary of Heritage Conservation Society of Assam (HeCSA), Jayanta Sharma, while lauding the efforts by Bholanath College of Dhubri, said that the college was the first in State to introduce the course on this important subject.

"This is undoubtedly a big move in conservation of the heritage sites of Assam and I feel other colleges of State should follow the steps taken by the Bholanath College of Dhubri," Sharma added.
