TANGLA: The two-day long Karam Utsav hosted by Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) Mangaldoi branch in association with the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) and the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) Udalguri chapter and Assam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS) Mangaldoi branch concluded here at Dimakuchi TE playground in Dimakuchi of the Udalguri district on Sunday. The event was observed in a vibrant manner with utmost enthusiasm where participants sang and danced in celebration, and several hundreds of people from nearby villages came to enjoy the festival.

Addressing the session, Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker and Paneri MLA, Biswajit Daimary said, “Every community must uphold their language, culture and heritage which are the basic ethos of every community. Every community of the State has been tirelessly working towards securing their language,culture and heritage.” He further reitarated that Karam Utsav binds not only the Adivasi community but every indigenous community which has co-existed in the State since time immemorial.

Addressing the session, Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha president and former Union Minister, Paban Singh Ghatowar said, “The Adivasis are the second largest community in terms of population in Assam and though the community is facing socio-economic and political crisis as the people are not united, cultural events like Karam Utsav binds the people of the community together in a common platform.”

He further said, “Adivasis must understand their culture and life values, and fight the evils in society and surmount orthodox ideologies prevalent in the society through education and awareness.” He also exhorted the Adivasi community to unite together to establish their socio-economic and political rights through democratic process.

The event was also attended by ACMS secretary Santiuse Kujur, minister Jayanta Mallabaruah; BTC deputy CEM Govindo Basumatary ; and others. Karam Puja honours God Karam, the deity of strength, youth and vitality. It is observed on the 11th day of the lunar month of Bhadra.
