LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of AYM (the Asomiya Yuva Mancha) has once again reiterated the demand for the removal of all encroachers from the Gariajan area of North Lakhimpur.
In this context, activists of the organization -- led by the organisation's central committee organizing secretary Anupam Saikia and its district president Chiranjit Bordoloi -- initiated a protest programme upon the Gariajan Bridge along NH-15 near Shani Mandir of North Lakhimpur town on Sunday.
The protesters demanded an immediate eviction drive to recover the land of the water body from such people.
Notably, the Gariajan has played a major role with regard to discharging the water from North Lakhimpur town. But this area of the water body is shrinking gradually due to the aggression of a section of local people, commercial institutions and people of doubtful citizenship. As a result, the water body has lost its water-discharging capacity. This leads to artificial floods in a large area of the town.
In this connection, the organization demanded that the Lakhimpur district administration must evict the encroachers. The organization also demanded that Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka must initiate steps on this issue -- pending for several years..
