HOWRAGHAT: The Land & Revenue department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) backed up by Central Reserve Police Force and Assam police cleared around twenty five Bighas of government revenue land on Saturday by evicting around 35 families who settled in that plot of land; named as Rongpangthir village situated 4 kilometres from Diphu town by the side of Diphu-Lumding road.

The eviction drive began around 7 am and continued till late afternoon. Initially the settlers tried to resist the demolition squad but later moved out of the place with their belongings.

The plot of land allotted to Sericulture department was re-allocated to Law department for construction of judicial court in 2012, later to remove the encroachment a litigation followed which went up to the extent of contempt of court case; ultimately as per the Guwahati High Court's order no WP(C)/722/2022 the council authority carried out the eviction drive today.

According to an official of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council the evicted indigenous Karbi people have been provided with alternative land against payment of land revenue; however the victim families have not acknowledged the claim of the council officials.
