DIBRUGARH: The ex-United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) Coordination Committee has sought the rehabilitation of former rebels who have returned to the mainstream. On Tuesday, a 20-member group of the committee led by joint chief convenor Rahendra Moran alias Guli Asom and president Danish Sonowal alias Danish Asom held a meeting with Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu at the DC office where rehabilitation and other issues related to the former rebels were discussed. Dibrugarh SP Shwetank Mishra and Tinsukia SP Debojit Deuri were also present in the meeting along with heads of seven government departments.

"We had a meeting with the deputy commissioner where various issues related to former ULFA (I) members were discussed. We have sought the rehabilitation of all former rebels through various government schemes of the State government. Because of lack of any meaningful employment, most of our members have been forced to live a miserable life after returning to the mainstream," Moran said.

He added, "Our members are sitting idle at the designated camps set up by the government. Since there are large tracts of unutilized agricultural land across the State we suggested that the former rebels should be allowed to grow food grains, vegetables and fruits on such plots. We also sought the release of all jailed ULFA (I) members and quick disposal of all pending cases."
