Faculty Development Programme on research methodology held in online mode

SIVASAGAR: A Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Research Methodology, organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Gargaon College in collaboration with the Department of Economics, Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, was organized in online mode from June 25 to June 29. The FDP aimed to equip faculty members with advanced research skills and to update them with the contemporary developments in various dimensions.

Throughout the week-long programme, each session focused on a specific research skill and encouraged active participation. The FDP aimed to enhance the participants’ abilities to carry out independent research, to write successful research projects, and effectively communicate their findings in national and international journals or conferences.

Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College and Chairperson of the FDP, along with Dr Surajit Saikia, IQAC Coordinator, and Joint Coordinators Dr Biman Kr Nath, Ankika Dutta, and Dr Saheen Shehnaz Begum led the initiative.

The organizing committee comprised of esteemed members such as Dr Dimbeshwar Das, Dr Nilutpal Chutia, Dr Bornali Dutta, Dr Mrinal Ghosh, and Sandeepa Agarwalla. In his inaugural speech, renowned academician and Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, emphasized on the need of incorporation of research in higher education as per FYUGP of NEP 2020.

Dr Chandan Kr Sarma, Associate Professor, Department of History at Dibrugarh University delivered the first session on June 25. He discussed on the topic “Studies in Ethnic Conflicts in South Asia: New Trends and Perspectives.” Dr Sarma defined ethnic conflicts as disputes between different ethnic groups or communities within a specific region arising from differences in language, religion, culture, and identity, and can take various forms, including political, social, economic confrontations. Research on such topics helps one to understand the root causes and identify patterns and trends.

Prof Ramesh Ch Deka, Vice-Chancellor of Cotton University, delivered a lecture on June 26 on the topic “UGC-CARE for Pursuing Quality Research.” This session aimed to provide participants with a foundational understanding of utilizing the UGC-CARE website for achieving high-quality publications. Dr Prasenjit Chatterjee, Professor and Dean (Research & Consultancy) at MCKV Institute of Engineering in Howrah, Kolkata, was the resource person on June 27. He discussed on “Systematic Literature Review and PRISMA.”

Dr Chatterjee shared insights into conducting systematic literature reviews and introduced the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. On June 28, Dr Somnath Maji, Post doctoral Research Fellow from the Department of Radiology at the University of Michigan-Medical School, delivered a lecture titled, “Development and Characterization of Osteogenic Microenvironment Mimicking Scaffold for Bone Tissue Engineering.”

Dr Maji discussed the creation of a scaffold that imitates the osteogenic micro environment, offering potential applications in bone tissue engineering. In the second session of the same day, Dr Gorky Chakraborty, Associate Professor at the Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK), spoke on the topic “Mess of a Method: Method to a Mess.”

Concluding the FDP on June 29, Debajyoti Bora, Assistant Professor from the Department of Statistics at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya (PDUAM) Karimganj, discussed the “Use of Statistical Software in Research.” Dr Joydeep Baruah, Professor and Director of the Surya Kumar Bhuyan School of Social Sciences at Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University Assam, threw light on “Understanding NSSO Unit Level Data.”
