GUWAHATI: Rehana Ahmed, the mother of Faizan Ahmed, the third-year student at IIT Kharagpur from Assam whose mysterious death is now being probed by a SIT, has sent off a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, requesting her intervention to ensure that the probe into her son's mysterious death case does not face any obstacles.

The investigation into Faizan's death is now being conducted by the new Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Calcutta High Court following a second post- mortem in Kolkata.

The letter dated June 16, which was reportedly sent through her lawyer Aniruddha Mitra states, "On October 14, 2022, the partially decomposed body of my only child, Faizan Ahmed, a Mechanical Engineering student at IIT Kharagpur, was discovered in a hostel room inside the IIT campus."

Faizan’s parents were convinced that their son had not committed suicide, as insisted on by the police initially and the IIT-K authorities, and had moved the Calcutta High Court for an independent investigation.

"Despite our immediate belief that he had been murdered upon seeing his lifeless body, both IIT Kharagpur and the District Police authorities insisted on labelling it as a suicide. The initial post-mortem report was inconclusive," the letter purportedly read as per media reports.

Calcutta HC ordered a second post- mortem and it was conducted on May 27, 2023, by renowned Forensic Expert Ajay Kumar Gupta. This time it was confirmed that Faizan had been brutally murdered, as an injury mark on the back of the head could be discerned.

After this report was presented to the HC on June 14, an order for establishing a new investigation team led by K Jayaraman, IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Headquarters, West Bengal, was ordered.

Rehana concluded her letter by requesting the intervention of the Bengal CM to ensure that the newly constituted investigation team could be able to carry out their duties without any obstacles and uncover the truth and identity of her son's murderer.

“I also request that efforts be made to apprehend the culprits and ensure that they face punishment, thus delivering justice for my deceased son," she concludes.

Media sources said that Rehana spent 23 days in Kolkata with her son's body and she alleged that IIT Kharagpur may try to impede the investigation into Faizan's death, now being conducted by the new Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Calcutta High Court, which is the reason why the grieving mother was forced to write to the Chief Minister in her quest for justice.

According to available information, 23-year-old IIT student Faizan Ahmed had secured the 11th rank in the All India level in the Joint Entrance Examination 2020 and secured admission to IIT Kharagpur. He was said to be actively associated with the Aerial Robotics Research and RoboSoccer teams.
