Faizan Ahmed Case: WB Police Team To Exhume Body For Second Post- Mortem

DIBRUGARH: Following a Calcutta high court directive, a West Bengal Police team has set out for Assam’s Dibrugarh for exhumation of the body of Faizan Ahmed, the student from Assam who was found dead of suicide at IIT Kharagpur, to conduct a second post-mortem examination.

On Sunday, Dibrugarh additional SP (headquarters) Bitul Chetia said, "Neither has the team arrived nor has it communicated with us so far. We are expecting it to be here any time soon. It is most likely to get in touch with us tomorrow morning. We will provide all possible help to the team and ensure that the high court order is carried out in the right spirit. At this moment, we are not aware whether it will be a CID team or a police team."

Earlier on April 25, a rare order was passed by the Calcutta HC, calling for the exhumation of unfortunate Faizan from a burial ground in Assam’s Dibrugarh town, in order to conduct a second post-mortem at the Medical College and Hospital, Calcutta. The court maintained that the second post- mortem is necessary to establish the true facts behind his death.

Faizan belonged from Tinsukia in Assam and his body had been buried at the Amolapatty Kabarstan (graveyard) in Dibrugarh town.

The twenty three year old Faizan Ahmed was a mechanical engineering student at IIT Kharagpur in the third year.

Last year, on October 14, his decomposed body was found in IIT Kharagpur’s Lala Lajpat Rai Hall of Residence room number C-205. IIT-K is located in West Bengal's West Midnapore district.

At that time, the college administration offered the view that the student has died by suicide, though the family refused to accept that contention and claimed that he was murdered. Faizan's parents proceeded to file a writ petition in Calcutta HC, which alleged that their son had been murdered and not killed himself.

On Sunday, Faizan's mother Rehana Ahmed told the media in Dibrugarh, "I see a ray of hope that Faizan will get justice. My son was murdered. He was not a coward who would kill himself."

The second post- mortem in Kolkata is expected to yield the truth behind Faizan’s death.
