HAFLONG: Like every year, this year also the Falcon Festival at Umrangsu Golf Field will be organized by the Falcon Festival organizing committee, which is a conglomeration of NGOs like Blue Hills Society, Haplao and various clubs and societies, from November 21 by following COVID-19 protocol, said the president of the committee, Joshringdao Phonglo.

This festival is being organized to create awareness about the protection and preservation of Falcons which visit Umrangsu every year during October and November. Roosting of Amur Falcon in Umrangso area is a story with a long past. People used to kill these birds for flesh, though they had not been identified as Amur Falcon. There was no mass killing as people used air-gun or catapult. After a series of awareness campaigns, along with the Forest Department's active participation, killing of these birds has almost stopped. This year from October 10, they started roosting at Tungbung and adjacent places near Umrangsu reservoir and this is expected to continue till November 25.

Talking to this correspondent, Phonglo said this festival was aimed at showcasing the rich culture along with creating awareness among the masses about protection and preservation of the environment and wildlife, and to promote tourism, thus creating sources of income for the unemployed youths of the district. He said festival was being organized with the patronage of the Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Debolal Gorlosa and his executive committee.
