Guwahati: Thuleshwar Das, father-in-law of the brave and strong woman Niharika who had carried him on her back to get him to hospital died on Monday night. He was undergoing treatment for COVID at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The photo of Niharika carrying her father-in-law on her back and then putting him on a private vehicle to get him to hospital in Raha, Nagaon had gone viral just a few days ago. The photo had created an uproar on social media. While many had praised the efforts of a daughter-in-law taking care of her father-in-law, many raised questions about the state of affairs and non-availability of healthcare facilities in certain parts of Assam.

It was on June 4 that the photo of Niharika and her father-in-law had gone viral. Sharing the photo, Assamese actress Aimee Baruah had praised woman power and the efforts of the lady carrying her sick father-in-law on her back to get treatment.

Her father-in-law was COVID positive and Niharika too had tested positive for COVID. The popular actress had wished "this inspiration of a woman a speedy recovery".

People commenting on Baruah's tweet had praised woman power and the efforts of Niharika. There were a few people who also raised the issue of lack of proper civic amenities in certain parts of the state.

Despite the best efforts of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, there seem to be certain deficiencies like availability of ambulances in remote areas of the state. The photo of Niharika and her father-in-law is a live example of that. It is also a fact that many do not have the financial wherewithal to access many of these facilities. Recently during his Darrang visit, Guardian Minister of Darrang, Chandra Mohan Patowary had fixed the rates for ambulances.

CM Sarma has appointed Guardian Ministers for every district of Assam to look into healthcare facilities and other developmental needs of each district.
