Festive mood grips Barpeta as Doul Festival begins

BARPETA: The famous Doul Festival of Barpeta started from Saturday here at Barpeta with traditional pomp and gaeity. The first day is called 'Gandhajatra' or 'Banhutsava'. The devotees thronged the Barpeta Xatra premises and witnessed the burning of meji.

It is believed that with the burning of meji all evil powers are demolished and turn into ashes. The gosain was encircled around the meji seven times and was placed in the Jagmohon griha after all the rituals at Mothor Chotal. On Sunday is the 'Bhar deul'. A souvenir named Dolay Govinda was also released by Basistha Sarma, Burha Xatriya of Barpeta Xatra.

Earlier, on Saturday morning a holigeet competition was held which was organized by Club Rising. Many groups took part in the competition. In the procession, the xatradhikars of Barpeta Xatra, Badistha Sarma and Goutam Pathak took part. Actress Mayuri Gotam and singer Priyanka Kalita also took part. The programme ended with the holigeets of Burha Xatriya Basistha Sarma.
