DHUBRI: The first consultation meeting of the trans community in Dhubri was held recently in the Dhubri Lions Club premises.

The meeting was organized by Rainbow Home of Seven Sisters, Guwahati, in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Department, Dhubri, and the Lions Club of Dhubri. Nine members from the trans community of Dhubri, and others attended the meeting.

The welcome speech was delivered by Chowdhury where he said that this programme was one of a kind in the Dhubri district where transgender people were being sensitized regarding their existence, legal rights, and ways were put forward to solve the problems they face in their daily lives, with help from the District Social Welfare department, Dhubri.

The objective of the programme was elaborated by Sister Chowallur. She stressed the need of applying for Transgender identity card, which is crucial for identification of a transgender person and also in applying various government schemes for the transgender person via the identity card. She also stressed how a humble livelihood can prove as an opportunity for the transgender person to lead a life as regular as any other persons in the society.

Moreover, she stressed the sensitization of the police personnel who deal with the cases of transgender people, when taken to them to register. She said that due to lack of awareness and sensitization of the challenges of the transgender person in a society, the peoples belonging to administration fails to help and reciprocate with the issues of the transgender peoples. She also talked on the procedures of applying the transgender identity card, consultation methods through a medical team, and legal methods for acquiring the declaration certificate for the process.

Yasmin NP stressed the activation of the Transgender Protection Cell in Dhubri. She mentioned about the rights that a transgender person holds, from the early Vedic era till date, and how the attitudes of the society has changed from time to time. The programme was followed by a group discussion.
