GUWAHATI: In a welcoming note for the people of Assam, the state will finally witness and travel on an electric locomotive.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Union Minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal wrote, "Creating An Aatmanirbhar Assam: For the first time in history, electric locomotive ran on the soil of Assam with successful trial run from Bongaigaon to Sarupeta stations."

Earlier, NF Railway's PRO informed The Sentinel has anything to go by, the running of electric trains between New Bongaigaon and Rangiya will be a reality from March 2021.

Speaking to the Sentinel, NF Railway PRO Nripen Bhattacharyya said, "If everything goes as planned, running of electric trains will be started in March this year between New Bongaigaon and Rangiya in Assam. Works for the project for the given stretch is over.

"It will be followed by running of electric trains between Rangiya and Guwahati by June/July this year.

In phases, this service will be extended up to Lumding and Dibrugarh.

"The proposed charging stations of such trains – one each at New Bongaigaon, Sorbhog, Nalbari, Kamakhya, etc have already been ready.

"Already an electric goods train has been running between New Jaipaiguri and Koch Behar. The works of this line from Koch Behar to New Bongaigaon are going on."
