NAGAON: Come winter and you will get to taste Jayanti Rohu fish (Rou fish) in Nagaon as the fishery department has targeted to make the high yielding fish variety available in abundance in the markets of Nagaon after a couple of months.

Jayanti Rohu fish is a high-yielding Rohu fish variety developed by the Central Institution of Fresh Water Aquaculture (CIFWA), Bhubaneswar four years ago. In 2018, CIFWA handed over 8 lakh Jayanti Rohu spawn to the Nagaon fishery department.

Jayanti Rohu, like the Rohu fish, is found in the water bodies of the State. But the high-yielding variety is known for its better look and sweeter taste. According to a fishery department source, Jayantiya Rohu is disease resistant, its growth is 18 per cent more than the traditional variety and is comparatively easy to cultivate due to its very low mortality rate.

Nagaon fishery officer Ramendra Barman said that as many as 40 lakh Jayanti Rohu spawn were developed by the department in its Junganbolohu Garh-based fish farm this year, of which 18 lakh spawn have already been distributed among the farmers.

"We are going to complete the distribution of all spawn within the next one week. Response of the farmers is very good and we hope Jayanti Rohu will be one of the main attractions among fish lovers in winter this year," Barman said.

Two central Assam districts – Nagaon and Morigaon- are known for fish since long because of the quality and taste. Nagaon has 57,000 hectare low-lying area and the district annually produces 35,262 MT fish, of which 20,198 MT fish are used for local consumption and nearly 15,000 MT fish are marketed in upper Assam districts.
