BOKAJAN: In yet another big seizure of exotic animals and a foiled attempt by traffickers to slip across inter-state borders, the Karbi Anglong police had confiscated a consignment of 5 endangered baby Chimpanzees near Dillai Tiniali area over NH 36 in East Karbi Anglong on Tuesday.
According to police officials, a Maruti Eco car bearing registration number was intercepted near Dillai Tiniali area along the Assam-Nagaland border on Tuesday evening. "We regularly check the incoming vehicles as this highway is a major drug transit route and when this vehicle approached our check post, our men signaled the driver to stop. On checking the vehicle, we found these baby chimpanzees stashed in small cages inside the vehicle. The vehicle was heading towards Guwahati." John Das, APS, SDPO Bokajan informed.
Police have arrested wo person namely Md. Hobibur Rahman and Md. Zanab Khan in connection. Both are resident of Sangaiyumpham village of Thuobal district in Manipur.
"We handed over the baby Chimpanzees along with the arrested persons to the Assistant Conservator of Forest, Manja Range under East Forest Division, Karbi Anglong. There is a huge market of exotic pets in Thailand and Myanmar and we doubt that these animals were also sourced into India from Myanmar via Manipur." SDPO John Das added.
