LAKHIMPUR: Flood and erosion have not only collapsed the economic foundation of the State, but also adversely affected the academic sector. Flood and erosion have caused severe damage to the academic institutions of Lakhimpur district, affecting the academic environment year after year.

The recent wave of the flash flood affected a total of 175 educational institutions of the district. As per the departmental source, 164 out of them are primary schools while the rest 11 are high schools. Though the flood water has receded from almost all these schools at present, siltation has caused an unhealthy environment in the campus of most of these schools.

The recent flash flood severely affected several schools in Pub Telahi and Lohit Khabalu Gaon Panchayats under Naoboicha Educational Block of the district. Flood caused by Subansiri River buried the desks and benches of Moroliamukh ME School under Lohit Khabalu GP, laying a cover of siltation of one to three feet density. The flood of the same river affected Mudoibil LP School, Rantijan LP School and Rantijan ME School under the same GP.

Similarly, various schools at No. 1 Pachnoi, No. 2 Pachnoi, Dezoo Chapori and under Paschim Telahi GP were affected by the recent flash flood caused by Ranganadi River due to the release of excess water from the catchment area of Ranganadi Hydro-Electric Project. Notably, over 80 schools were affected by flood under Naoboicha Education Block.

On the other hand, flood caused major damages to the Shantipur LP School under Kamalaboria GP and Dhakhin Rupahi LP School under Lakhimpur Education Block. Similarly, flood-affected 17 schools under Bihpuriya Education Block, 22 schools under Narayanpur Education Block, two schools under Ghilamora Education Block, one school under Dhakuakhana Education Block and two schools under Bordoloni Education Block. Though there are only two days left for the schools of the district to open after the summer vacation, the severely-affected schools have to wait for days for a healthy environment to return.
