Flood damages Rs 33-crore Kumatia embankments under Dhemaji

LAKHIMPUR: Before the onset of the rainy season of the year, the people dwelling on the both banks of Kumatia River at Bordoloni area under Dhemaji district have to spend days with fear of imminent flooding to be caused by the same river. Massive rain during the month of June has damaged both the sides of the embankments of the river. Under such circumstances, a fund amounting to around thirty three crores, which was sanctioned for the construction of the embankments, is about to end in smoke.

Regarding the issue, Dhemaji district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Friday expressed strong reaction after a delegation of the organization had visited the damaged sites of the embankments. Expressing vehement resentment in this connection against the Water Resources Department and engaged contractor, Dhemaji district AASU president Sanjib Das and general secretary Jayanta Borgohain in a press communique alleged that Dhemaji Division of WRD had just showed its soft corner to the engaged contractor without any response to the instructions made by WRD Minister Pijush Hazarika.

“The embankments of the river Kumatia were constructed without adopting any scientific measures and as per plan and estimate. As a result of it, rain during the pre-monsoon season, has damaged the embankments. It has posed massive threat of inundation in the upcoming days after breaching the embankments in monsoon season. Threat has come to the safety and security to the life and properties of the riverine people. Every year, the people dwelling on the banks of River Kumatia have to suffer a lot because of flooding due to the dereliction on the part of the Dhemaji Division of the WRD and contractor towards their responsibility,” the press communique stated. Reacting to the issue, Dhemaji AASU adviser Dipak Sarmah and central committee executive member Rabi Kachari demanded WRD Minister to visit the embankments of the River Kumatia and take immediate action against the WRD officials and contractor engaged in the construction of the same.
